About

Since the “About Me” portion is getting more hits than my actual blog, I may as well not waste an opportunity.  My snakes outnumber my kids. I am a zookeeper. No, really! I work in the Herpetology department of my local zoo. My pet peeves include wet clothing buried in the hamper and little popcorn kernels that get stuck in my teeth. Most days, I have the attention span of a gnat.

I am owned by a PBGV (that’s a wire-haired basset, if you’re not down with dog lingo) who spends an annoying percentage of the time thinking she has puppies, and several cats who would eat them if she did.

My greatest accomplishment is conquering my fear of my pressure cooker. My new biggest fear is that my butt will always be this big.

I blog a couple of times a week now.  Comments are welcome, but keep ’em clean. My kids read this blog.

Please take my thoughts with a grain of salt. I recommend kosher non-iodized.

And before you launch on your adventures, be sure to read my very first post. It explains where I’m coming from. I Have Nothing Against My Mother.

Occasionally Becoming Cliche occasionally receives vendor/brand sponsorships for mentioning their products and services. If your company would like to sponsor a post, please contact me.

I can be reached at zooheatheroneATgmailDOTCOM and by carrier pigeon. They all know my name.

  1. Hilarious intro to “you” 🙂 I found you on my blog today and decided to check yours out. It looks interesting! I look forward to reading more. I am trying to post every day as well (except weekends) and it isn’t always easy. Perhaps we can swap tips sometime!

  2. Well evidently great minds think alike because here’s your second VBA!! Details are in my post at http://wp.me/p1EiAO-cf
Following the award guidelines, the post includes the other nominees that I feel are a must read and a little bit about their blogs. At the end of the post are the instructions for picking up your award and a graphic suitable for framing, if you have a teeny tiny frame. I’ve also updated my blogroll with your blog.

Note: As an extra bonus, there’s a picture of me in the post when I was a Catholic Altar Boy. It’s a convenient wallet sized photo ready to print and carry as a constant reminder of how life can go oh so horribly wrong.

  3. Great work. I’m envious that you make blogging everyday happen. I’m a stay-at-home dad, and I’m lucky to get once a week in. But then again, I like goofing off too much too probably. I’m adding you to my blogroll. Thanks for good reads!

  4. Hey there! I saw a comment you wrote on my blog recently and followed the link back to yours, and I’m so glad I did! You are hilarious! I’d literally read twelve posts before jerking back to reality and realizing I have to get back to work, but well done! Keep writing and I’ll keep reading!

  5. The attention span of a…..ooooh look!…a kitty!…… now….what was I saying?…….. I am trying to work my way UP to having the attention span of a gnat….. ha ha…… You have a great day! 🙂

  6. Hey, you are seriously funny. Just wanted to pop over and say thanks for stopping by my blog. I read the piece about your older sister and what a thoughtful younger sister you’ve been to her throughout the years. Sweet:). We celebrated my older sister’s birthday at our house last weekend, when we lit the crowd of candles gathered on her tall cake it was like we were preparing to launch her into space or something. She looked happy though. Sisters are awesome.

  7. Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting on my Thanksgiving post.
I like your blog– a post a day– wow! Not sure I could do it.
I like the post about your sister. Very sweet. I’ve written about one of mine (Art Rocks the School).

  8. I followed a comment you left for me back to here, and I am SO glad I did. So far what I have read I have laughed at, cringed at (sorry I can’t even touch a magazine page with a snake picture on it) and thoroughly enjoyed. I’m going back for more! 🙂

  9. Delighted to “meet” you! I can see that I’m in for some intense learning and excitement as I wander through your blog. What fun! Hope you’re having as great a time producing at as we all are enjoying the slightly psychedelic fruits of your labors.
    Kathryn

  10. I want to start by saying . . . if you’d rather not participate, I totally understand. I have declined in the past myself. It is kind of a pain in the arse. That said.
I’m awarding you the Versatile Blogger Award because I like your blog and think others will too. As with everything in life, there are strings attached. 1) You are to give the award to 15 other bloggers you feel are deserving and notify them of the award. 2) Make a post thanking the person that gave you the award (moi’) and listing your 15 choices. Provide links to these 16 blogs in your post. 3) Lastly, in your post, list seven things the bloggy world doesn’t know about you.
I dont know how to link the graphic for your blog. Maybe you can save it from mine? Or tell me how to link it haha
Personally, I had trouble with it, so feel free to contact me if you need help.
The bottom line . . . whether you participate or not . . . I think you have a rockin’ blog.

  11. Oh my gosh! So funny. My daughter says she has ADOS. Attention Deficit ooo shiny … Yeah, I can relate. We used to have potluck dinners on Wednesdays at church and, since mother was a prolific gardener and we grew a bajillion green beans to can each summer, she would always take green beans to church suppers. Invariably, she hopped into the shower after beginning the process. “Honey, watch that pressure cooker for me.”
And then, I was on my own.
    Watch it for what?
One day, I discovered the reason: green bean hell.
Valid fear and hilarious “about” post.

  12. But enough talk about you… let’s talk about me! You gave me quite a scare earlier when you were the very first person to ever comment on one of my posts. Yes, you were my first, and I’ll never forget you… Especially after I get this e-mail headed with “Please moderate: “BAD MOOD ON THE RISE!”. I’m thinking that WordPress doesn’t like the content in my post and wants me to tone it down, and I’m also thinking that this is going to be a very short relationship! (no, I’m not paranoid – all my delusions are based on true stories.)

But it was just you… giving me some friendly advice, and making me aware of your previously unknown existence. Thanks!

  13. love the tagline…”my journey to becoming my mother” awesome! Your blog is such a delight to read! i’ve only just stumbled across you but I intend on coming back, so I am now following! I also Liked your Facebook page, maybe you will consider returning the favor?

Nice to meet you…and I am Kellie by the way!
    Happy blogging!!! ♥

    • So far, so good. I modified it somewhat to five days a week, since fewer people read over the weekend. My archives show blogs as far back as April, but those were imported when I started here in July.

      • 😀 I started in July too! I’m still doing it 7 days a week – I’m not really being concerned if people are reading it or not (I don’t suppose it’s to everyone’s taste). I think I’ve missed about 5 days – but I’ve found that you can fill in the gaps, so I’m going to do that at some point too! 🙂

  14. Hi!

OMG I am completely out of sorts this morning as I am low on colored Xmas lights, like 2 strands low for a 7′ tree. Stop the world I want to get off and it’s 7am on a Sunday and a whopping 28 degrees. Jeezly crow.

It’s in this spirit that I seek out the blogosphere for relief and am drawn to the cute kitty on the Freshly Pressed section. I am rewarded as your birthday post is INSANELY funny, as were the several others that I read, and now I can’t stop laughing. THANK YOU! Crisis averted.

Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed and I hope you had a great birthday and lots of laughter. It must be true, all who wander are not lost :).

    #Following…..

  15. Thanks for visiting my blog, and the encouraging comment…thought I’d pop over and check you out…..I admire your hilariousness (is that even a word?)
We have no snakes but DO have a couple of neat lizards….a couple dogs, a cat …and I include the 5 boys as pets as well…;)
    Looking forward to reading more!

      • We have a Leopard Gecko (still a baby) and a Crested Gecko, we just adopted from a wonderful owner who is about to venture to college…they’re so neat! I have nearly pushed the limit with the hubby (he’s not very pet friendly….especially if they can get out…lol)

  16. I’ve nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award, which I hope you’ll accept and enjoy! The rules can be found on my page.

    Have a wonderful day!

  17. Love your sense of humor -much like mine, and you express yourself better! I guess after 27 years of marraige and two teenage girls my neurons are somewhat fried. Thank you for visiting and leaving a comment on my latest post/my blog. Appreciate it. We have ferrets, not snakes. Our two dogs love them. Me – not so much when they jailbreak at 2am, but they’re cute as heck so they get a free pass! Happy Blogging!

  18. Your comment on my animal photos is of even greater value now that I know you work in a zoo and probably see those animals daily. Thanks again, much appreciated. Oh and great about page, now on to the rest of the blog!

  19. Heyyaz! Thanks for dropping by my blog and for the like 🙂 Just scrolled a bit through your blog and I really like what I saw. I’m crazy about animals and turtles and snakes are among them. You’re pretty funny too. You can consider me a follower now 🙂

  20. I was wondering if you might help me out…El Guapo and Edward Hotspur gave me quite a bad time the other day, and I thought it might be fun if some of us bloggers who frequently see their sites would mention “conspiracy” or some form of the word in any comment we make on their blog tomorrow. The idea is to get them thinking that it is weird that so many people are talking about conspiracies…but we should still be subtle enough that they won’t figure out there really is a conspiracy to quickly.

  21. My Mom was afraid of the pressure cooker and handed the fear down to my sister. I remember the day it “blew” and the marks it left on the ceiling. We treid painting over it, but the grease just leaked through. Thanks for making me go down the memory lane. By the way, I don’t worry that my butt will always be this big…I worry it will get bigger!!

  22. I am so glad you updated your profile because it is delightful. I was just about to leave a comment on the tortoises but wanted to know why you had them which caused me to check your About Me section again. Viola! So glad I did. You’re very funny and relatable. I too have a huge fear of pressure cookers exploding which is why I threw mine out, and as far as my butt is concerned, I’ve given up.

    Cheers!

  23. This is such a wonderful blog! It was my dream to be a zoo-keeper since I was a child. When 17, I spent a month volunteering at Zoo Negara, the national zoo of Malaysia while exploring the country and it is one of my most treasured experiences.

  24. I just came across your blog, very entertaining! I am going for a post a week, and that sometimes seems rough, I am too new to blogging to even imagine a post a week! Way to go and good luck with it. I will keep myself updated.

    • After awhile, I got into a groove. Sometimes I write ahead of time and set it to post automatically, and sometimes I’m sitting at 8am wondering what to post at 9! Good luck!

  25. Hey Squish’s mom. For what it’s worth, I think what you doing here is absolutely lovely. I nominated you for the Lovely Blog Award today, just so you know. Keep those tortoise posts coming. I have no idea what to name ’em…

  26. Let’s not forget popcorn kernels hurt wicked bad, when you’re eating popcorn. They’re very bad surprises. Especially when you eat popcorn as fast as I do.

  28. Being a snake keeping, zoo loving mom doesn’t sound cliche at all, unless that’s what you’re mother was like? Hmmmm…. Now if you were an alligator keeping, zoo mom, now there’s your cliche. i think you’re safe.

  29. Hey there…wanted to let you know that Snape will be going up against Doctor Who in the Fictional Hunger Games semis next week. If you’d like, feel free to write a bit on why you think he would win. Good luck!

  30. Hey there! Just stumbled upon your blog and I am loving it so far! I am new to the blogging world and am really enjoying myself! Hope you’ll check mine out annacampbellblog.wordpress.com! 🙂

  31. Wow! blogging everyday for a year, and you did it! Well done! So what’s the plan now? I guess you’re enjoying blogging too much to stop now 🙂
Thanks for the comment on my blog too.

  36. Love, love, LOVE your blog and writing. I, too, intended to blog every day for a year but got distracted. Now I just blog when what I have to say absolutely has to get out and put itself on “paper.”

Your pressure cooker fears reminded me of the time my mother tried to make split pea soup in her pressure cooker. It took a week to get it off the ceiling and I couldn’t eat split pea soup again for 35 years…

  37. Hey, would you consider reblogging this to your blog! My friends need to raise $18,000 dollars for this adoption. I know this basket won’t bring in that much, but seriously right now she’s only gotten $150 toward it! That’s not nearly enough to give this amazing basket away. I only have a small following. Could you please if I beg pretty and promote you somehow?

    Thanks!!

  45. PBGV’s are cool! I dont think I’ve seen one of those guys in 20 years, they’re so rare in the US.

There was a technician when I was at UC Davis vet school in the Exotics Clinic that bred those…that wouldn’t be you by chance, right?
    I mean, reptiles, PBGV’s…that’s kind of a coincidence…

  48. Hi! I like your tagline! I feel the same way, and I don’t have kids! I notice things I’ll do or say and think – Oh My gaud! It’s happening! Looking forward to reading more from you.

  49. Thanks for visiting my blog, and for the comments. I also about stepped on poor Lulu when I saw your Twitter note. I am a blog/twitter newbie, so I’m still figuring everything out as far as etiquette…is there social networking etiquette? Anyway, thanks again!

  51. I love kosher non-iodized comments. I try to wrap mine up in fortune cookies but still haven’t figured how to get those comments into the cookie. Oh well. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Actually it was. No that’s Nome. Oops.

  52. I promise to be reading more of your blogs, not just the About page! Looking forward to a cup of cocoa (baking cocoa, so salt added, quite compatible with your comments therefore) and insomnia so I can spend a nighttime on the blogosphere–the only time I have time for now. Also I just want to mention I both admire and envy your zookeeper lifestyle, the zoo continues to be one of my favorite, lifelong hangouts. Thanks for all of your sharing, always good to find good words to take in.

  53. I’m a thrift-store shopping mother of three as well. Snakes do not appeal to me, but my husband likes them. Cat-lover would be more appropriate as long as they are short-haired. I’m allergic to the others.

  54. “My pet peeves include wet clothing buried in the hamper and little popcorn kernels that get stuck in my teeth.”
You see, I LOVE the little popcorn kernels that get stuck in my teeth because it means I just ate delicious popcorn. Annoying as it is, it’s like a reminder of a hot, buttery rendezvous.

  55. Hello fellow Heather!
You have my dream job! I’m studying biology (I’m hoping to get my master’s in something) and I love reptiles! I’m so jealous!
